For most of us primary care provides the initial pathway into the healthcare system when we feel ill or have a health problem. We may go to see our doctor, visit a dentist or an optician; even going to the chemists to pick up medication prescribed by the GP. All of these are primary care services.
Looking beyond the local surgery there are other primary care services, such as community and specialist nursing, community hospitals and diagnostic and treatment centres. All of these are funded and in some cases directly provided by NHS Bradford and Airedale and Bradford and Airedale Community Health Services.
Should your doctor refer you for further investigation or treatment in hospital then the funding for that is also provided by the NHS Bradford and Airedale. So primary care trusts are at the very centre of the NHS and hold the money allocated by the Department of Health for the provision of all local healthcare services. We are therefore publicly accountable for obtaining the best value for money healthcare services for you.
All of the staff at NHS Bradford and AIredale are committed to improving your wellbeing and that of all those we serve in our local communities. We therefore aim to commission the very best services for you based on your healthcare needs.
Using the funding to best effect means that we must also concentrate on promoting well being and improving the health of our communities so that people do not become ill in the first place. So we tackle important health issues such as reducing obesity, smoking cessation and encouraging people to take more exercise. We recognise that we cannot successfully address all of these public health issues on our own so we seek partnerships with other organisations to make even better use of our resources.
