World class commissioning - 'adding life to years and years to life.'

What is world class commissioning?

Why is commissioning important?

Who will be responsible for making it happen?

How is world class commissioning different and how will it affect me?

Where can I find out more?

Commissioning is the process of deciding which services or products are needed by a population, and buying them to provide a more effective and targeted service.

World class commissioning describes outstanding performance in the way we commission health and care services. It aims to transform the way we operate and in doing so will ensure the NHS remains one of the most progressive and high performing health systems in the world.

The vision and competencies for world class commissioning set out what it means to be 'world class' and how it can be achieved.

The vision for world class commissioning focuses on assessing and prioritising the health needs of the local population and meeting those needs. For successful commissioning, we will be working in close partnership with all local community partners.

In the NHS, commissioners act on behalf of the public, ensuring they have access to the services they need, not only now but also in the future. It is only through good commissioning that we will be able to deliver the best possible health and well-being outcomes for the population, whilst making the most effective use of available resources.

Good commissioning in the NHS will help ensure people live longer and healthier lives.

Commissioning is the tPCT’s primary responsibility, so we will be driving the improvements. We will be playing a leading role in improving the health of the Bradford and Airedale population and making sure everyone receives better patient care.

World class commissioning cannot be achieved by the tPCT alone, so we will be working closely with patients, clinicians and other relevant partners including the local authority to make the changes happen.

The focus for world class commissioning will be on providing a pro-active, rather than a re-active health service, which delivers improved services and treatments. This will be achieved by building stronger relationships with community partners and listening to and communicating well with local communities.
